And the highlight of the event was a talk by a renowned breast surgeon in the U.S., Dr. Norman San Agustin, President & CEO of Asian Breast Center.

It is a fact that Breast Cancer is still among the leading cause of cancer death among women and sadly, the Philippines has the highest breast cancer incident rate in Asia.
Good thing now that the number of Breast Cancer survivors is steadily increasing.

And this can be attributed to advanced treatments that are becoming accessible to many people across the globe, as well as better awareness about the disease, and the practice of regular screening that helps detect cancer at an earlier and therefore, more curable stage.

Dr. San Agustin noted:
Early detection saves life. I found out that the treatment for breast cancer here in the Philippines is mostly taking out the whole breast, which does not guarantee that the cancer will not grow back in or near the areas. In the US, it is the opposite. About 90% of the treatment entails preserving the breast through breast conserving therapy.
Asian Breast Center at Centuria Medical Makati offers not only innovative breast cancer therapies but also consultation and various aids to prevent breast cancer.

They offer these many FIRSTS:

Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI), Yields 400% times better results than an ordinary mammogram Specifically designed to better detect breast cancer in women with dense breasts (normally Asians who has smaller breast size) --- dense breast tissues look white, unfortunately, tumors appear white too in mammogram.
Molecular Breast Imaging
Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT). - a new and innovative radiation treatment that provides a single dose of radiation for 25 to 30 minutes immediately after a lumpectomy while the patient is still asleep VS. the 33 sessions or 6 and a half weeks of chemo therapy. How? Dr. San Agustin explains… “While you’re asleep we remove the lump, insert the device, radiate for 20-30 minutes, sew the incision, then you can go home. You go back to work within six days, and only go back to see your doctor for follow-ups, not treatments,”

Profit-for-Charity medical clinic.  Freestanding ambulatory cancer care unit for profit-for-charity, meaning all the money that this center will make—the profit—will go to a foundation that supports awareness and advance breast cancer treatments. What an advocacy!

Here’s some statistics shared to us by Dr. San Agustin:

  1. One out of eight women in the United States develop breast cancer while here in the Philippines, it’s one out of four.
  2. In the US, only 10% die from breast cancer while 50% dies of the disease in our country.
  3. Hundred percent of them gets treated in the US while 70% dies without treatment here

Alarming isn’t it?

This has prompted him to set up Asian Breast Center at Centuria Medical Makati, where facilities are at par with the best in the world. The doctors at this center are established names who work for top hospitals in the United States, who believes in giving more options to people suffering from this CURABLE disease.

Dr. San Agustin himself is one of the top US East Coast surgeons with a dedication to his calling. His impassioned attitude to giving back has led him to be drawn back to his beloved Philippines, to help Filipino women fight cancer. Joining his advocacy are other highly trained Filipino doctors including Dr. Sammy Ang, Dr. Ed Santos, Dr. George Bocobo, and Dr. Max Basco.

With all these doctors, You don’t have to lose your breast to cancer. Go to Asian Breast Center and be treated!

Congratulations Dr. San Agustin and the rest of your group for this milestone…. Your advocacy means a lot to the hardworking and family-oriented Filipino women of today!  More power!!!

About Breast Cancer in the Philippines
There are several types of breast cancer. Among the common types are ductal carcinoma in situ, the most common type of noninvasive breast cancer, where cancer has not spread yet and usually has a very high cure rate; the invasive ductal carcinoma, which starts in a duct of the breast and grows into the surrounding tissue; the invasive lobular carcinoma, which starts in the glands of the breast that produce milk; and the inflammatory breast cancer, which makes the skin of the breast appear red and feel warm (giving it the appearance of an infection).
It is not exactly known how one gets breast cancer. However, there are risk factors that should be considered. These includes:
  1. Age (the chances of breast cancer increase as you get older);
  2. Family history; personal history (if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer before or certain benign breast conditions);
  3. Menstruation (women who started their menstrual cycle at a younger age (before 12 yrs old) or went through menopause after 55 yrs. old;
  4. Having dense breast tissue, as documented in a mammogram;
  5. Having no child or having the first child after 30 yrs old;
  6. Being overweight;
  7. Using oral contraceptives for the past 10 years; and
  8. Using combined hormone therapy after menopause.

  1. Breast cancer is a serious medical condition that requires prompt and effective treatment. While there is no single "cure" for breast cancer, it can be treated through a combination of different therapies, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

    In terms of finding the best breast surgeon in Karachi, Pakistan, there are several factors to consider. It is important to look for a surgeon who has extensive experience in treating breast cancer, and who has a track record of achieving good outcomes for their patients.

    One way to find a highly qualified breast surgeon is to ask for recommendations from your primary care physician, or from other healthcare professionals who specialize in breast cancer treatment. You can also research local hospitals and clinics that specialize in breast cancer care, and look for surgeons who are affiliated with these institutions.
